The Wishing Stone Garden at The Ridge Preschool

A strong sense of belonging is essential in early childhood education. At The Ridge Preschool, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, welcomed, and connected, and when their families feel included and respected as partners.

One of the ways we intentionally foster belonging is through our Wishing Stone Garden, a meaningful ritual that welcomes families into our preschool community.

What Is the Wishing Stone Garden?

The Wishing Stone Garden is a shared space where families are invited to place a decorated stone when they join The Ridge Preschool. Each stone represents a family’s hopes, values, and connection to our community.

Families may choose to:

  • Write a wish or intention for their child

  • Decorate a stone together at home

  • Place the stone during orientation or the early weeks of care

This simple ritual helps families feel connected from the very beginning.

Why a Sense of Belonging Matters in Early Childhood

Belonging is a core principle of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and is closely linked to children’s wellbeing, identity, and confidence.

When children experience belonging, they are more likely to:

  • Settle comfortably into preschool

  • Build trusting relationships with educators

  • Explore learning with confidence

  • Develop emotional security

For families, a sense of belonging means feeling welcomed, heard, and valued within the early learning environment.

This practice also supports National Quality Standard (NQS) Quality Area 6, which focuses on collaborative partnerships with families.

How the Wishing Stone Garden Builds Community

The Wishing Stone Garden is more than a visual feature. It is a symbol of shared community and connection.

It:

  • Welcomes new families in a calm, meaningful way

  • Acknowledges that every family brings their own story

  • Helps children see their family as part of the preschool community

  • Creates continuity as the garden grows over time

Children often revisit the garden, recognising their stone and noticing new ones added. These moments reinforce a strong sense of belonging and ownership.

Respecting a Shared Space

We ask families and children to respect the Wishing Stone Garden by leaving stones where they are once placed. This helps children learn about:

  • Respect for shared environments

  • Caring for community spaces

  • Responsibility and belonging

These values are embedded naturally through everyday experiences rather than explicit instruction.

Building Belonging, One Stone at a Time

Each stone in the Wishing Stone Garden represents a family who has joined our preschool community. Together, they reflect the collective identity of The Ridge Preschool.

Belonging at The Ridge is not just written in our philosophy. It is lived through daily practice, thoughtful rituals, and strong relationships with families.

A Warm Invitation to Families

New families are invited to participate in the Wishing Stone Garden as a symbol of joining our community. Existing families play an important role in maintaining this shared space, helping us create a preschool where every child and family feels they truly belong.
