At The Ridge Preschool & Childcare Centre, our philosophy is not something we display on the wall and forget. It guides how we show up for children and families every single day.
Our philosophy is grounded in three core principles: Respect, Respond, Reflect. These values shape our curriculum, our relationships, and the way children experience their early years with us.

Respect: Seeing Each Child as Capable and Whole
Respect at The Ridge begins with how we view children.
We see children as capable, curious individuals with their own thoughts, emotions, and ways of understanding the world. This means we take children’s feelings seriously, we listen to their ideas, and we honour their pace of learning and development.
In practice, respect looks like:
allowing children time to settle and transition in ways that feel safe
valuing children’s voices, choices, and preferences
creating calm, welcoming environments that support wellbeing
Respect also extends to families. We recognise that families know their children best and are valued partners in their child’s learning journey.
Respond: Following Children’s Cues and Interests
Our curriculum is not driven by rigid plans or one-size-fits-all activities.Instead, we respond to children.
Educators carefully observe children’s play, conversations, and emotional cues. These observations guide how learning experiences are planned, extended, and adapted.
Responding in practice means:
adjusting experiences based on children’s interests and needs
supporting emotions with empathy and guidance
extending learning through intentional, meaningful interactions
This responsive approach ensures learning is relevant, engaging, and deeply connected to each child’s sense of belonging.
Reflect: Growing Quality Through Thoughtful Practice
Reflection is at the heart of quality early learning.
Our educators regularly reflect on:
children’s learning and wellbeing
the effectiveness of learning environments
feedback from families and the wider community
Through reflection, we strengthen our practice and ensure our curriculum continues to meet the evolving needs of children and families.
Reflection also supports continuous improvement. We are committed to learning, growing, and refining what we do, because children deserve the very best.
Our Curriculum in Action
Our philosophy comes to life through a play-based, nature-connected curriculum.
Children learn through exploration, relationships, movement, and hands-on experiences. Nature play, open-ended materials, and unhurried time support creativity, resilience, and problem-solving.
Educators act as guides and co-learners, intentionally supporting learning while allowing children the freedom to discover and explore.
What This Means for Children and Families
When philosophy and practice align, children feel:
safe and emotionally supported
confident to explore and take risks
respected as capable learners
Families feel:
heard and valued
informed and connected
confident in the care and education their child receives
A Place Where Values Are Lived, Not Just Spoken
At The Ridge Preschool & Childcare Centre, our philosophy is woven into everyday moments. It is seen in how educators greet children, how learning unfolds through play, and how relationships are nurtured with care and intention.
This is what Respect, Respond, Reflect looks like in practice.
